Stefanuskyrkja

Stefanuskyrkja is today a deconsecrated church building that is used for parties, information meetings and concerts.

When Nærlandsparken was owned by the Norwegian Deacon Association, they built a church, designed by architect Tor Sørensen, which was completed in 1969. The church of “Nærlandsheimen” was concecrated March 16th, 1969 by Bishop Olav Hagesæther. In 1974 an addition was built so the church got its own church lounge and kitchen.

The church was named Stefanuskyrkja in 1994, named after one of the first deacons in the oldest Christian church. It is told that Stephen was a man “full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.” He was killed roundabout year 33 a.d. because of his Christian faith and, according to the New Testament, is the first Christian martyr. Boxing Day is marked as the day of Stephen in the churches. You can read about Stephen in Acts chapter 6 and 7.

In September 2010, Stefanuskyrkja was deconcecrated and all the ecclesiastical equipment was given to the churches of Jæren deanery.
